
This is a monk seal lying on the sand at the beach. The mother monk seal is seven feet tall. It weighs 500 pounds. Monk seals are very large. They are silver-gray and their belly is tan. The baby seals are called pups and they are black all over. They sleep on the sand during the day-especially when they have a baby with them. They do not want to be disturbed by other people.
The monk seals are usually are found in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and in the ocean around them. Sometimes they visit the beaches of Oahu and Kauai. That is where they are found.
The Hawaiian monk seal has been living on Earth for 15 million years. When they get hungry they go hunting for food. Their favorite foods are octopus, eels, fish, squid, and lobsters. So before they go swimming they watch for sharks because the sharks are hunting for seals.
The monk seal is edangered because people hunt for them. The monk seal is endangered because people kill them.
