Indiana Bat

Indiana Bat / vleermuis Common name: Indiana Bat
Scientific name: Myotis sodalis
Group: Mammal

Status: Endangered since 1967

Description: The Indiana Bat is grey or light brown in color. It is 41-49mm long (medium sized) and it weighs between 6-9 grams.

Habitat: It hibernates (sleeps for the winter) in cool caves and it roosts in the summer in woodland areas

It hibernates from about October to April, it migrates then to summer roots.
Locally,(Indiana) these bats live in caves like Wyandott Cave in Crawford County, Indiana.

Food: It eats insects and primarily feeds at night

Reproduction: one single young at one time, each year or season. The mother takes care of the young

Threats to the Indiana bat:
* mostly the danger is when man disturbs the bats in the caves.
* man has also killed the bats, and also deforestation is a problem for them (summer roosts)
* freezing and flooding of their hibernation or roosting areas also is a threat

Protection: One protection is the law called the Lacey Law which says that it is against the law to disturb any wildlife...including the bats. It is against the law to have anything to do with them alive or dead, or their habitat.
