| Deser USA Bobcat Felis rufus My animal is the desert U.S.A. Bobcat. It has a short tail, long legs, large paws, and the tail is always black tipped with white. It weighs anywhere from 15 to 20 pounds, but the highest recorded weight is 30 pounds. Some are paler, with a tawny, gray body spotted with black. They live in Southern Canada, Northern U.S.A., Mexico, and are more common in California's chapparal communities. It lives off rabbits, mice, squirrels, wood rats, chipmunks, as well as some animal eggs. The females have an annual litter of 2 or 3. Most kittens are born small, blind and helpless in April or May after a gestation period of 60 to 70 days. The mother defends them, keeping the father away until the kittens are weaned at about two months. The male may reappear to help the female collect food. Until 1971, the bobcat had been pursued and destroyed as an undesirable predator and little thought was given to its status or welfare. It was also killed for its fur. The protective regulations should allow the bobcat to thrive in California because there are limited places you can hunt and there are limited amounts of them to hunt. Resources: 1.
