Cheetah
| Cheetah Acinonyx Jubatus (scientific name) The cheetah is a large feline cat, with golden tan fur that has small round dark spots. It can run very quickly, and has fur that is smooth and short. It is not a climbing cat, however. Its body is built for quick running, not climbing. During the pre-Colonial times, it lived in many parts of Africa and Arabia Now, it lives in certain places in African and Asian countries. The cheetah hunts for prey in mountainous areas, savannahs, jungles, and wide open places. During mating season the females attract the males. It takes about 95 days for the litter to be born. The average litter is 1 to 6 cubs, but as many as 8 in a litter have been found. The cubs begin to eat meat around 6 to 8 weeks. The reason cheetahs are becoming extinct is caused by man. The animals fear humans, and we hunt them and tear down their environments. But there are programs trying to save them, such as the DeWildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre.
