Black Caiman

Black Caiman

Its common name is Black Caiman and its scientific name is Melanosuchus Niger. The Black Caiman belongs to the reptile family and it lives in fresh waters: rivers and lakes of Colombia, Bolivia,Brazil,Ecuador and Venezuela in South America .
It is a black animal of a dark colouration, with yellow or white bands across the flanks of its body, with large eyes and a very big mouth with 76 teeth.
It feeds on fish including piranhas and catfish and aquatic vertebrates, including large rodents.
The female constructs a mound nest into which 30 to 50 eggs are laid. l The females remain close to the nest and hatching occurs between 42 and 90 days.
It is in danger of extinction because they are illegally hunted for their skins and because their habitat is being destroyed though deforestation and the burning of swamplands.
