South-American Horned Frog

Its common name is Horned Frog, and its scientific name is Ceratophys ornata. It belongs to the amphibian family. It lives in burrows in the leafy, muddy floors of the tropical forests in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil.
They are fat frogs of about 15 cm. long. They are often very colourful, usually green with dark red markings along their back. They are often called "mouth with legs" because the mouth appears to be the entire front half of the body. Its horns are really the folds of skin that are located over its eyes. It has teeth on the roof of the mouth, as well as around the outside of its jaw.
It feeds on large insects and small vertebrates such as lizard, mice etc. It usually lives for about 6 years. Females deposit between 1000 and 2000 eggs in still water, and tadpoles are born after 2 weeks.
