Madagascar Giant Day Gecko
| Madagascar Giant Day Gecko Size: When they hatch they are the size of half your pinkie finger and grow to be 11 inches long. It takes about one year for them to reach 8 inches long. Appearance: They are florescent green color with orange or red marking along their eyes and splotches on their back. Their scales are small bubbles. The day geckos skin is very sensitive and can tear easily. Habitat: Day geckos live in Madagascar, an island off of Eastern Africa. The island is covered in tropical rain forest. Day geckos need high humidity to live. They are diurnal, which means they are awake in the day and sleep at night. They are also arboreal, which means they live in the trees and rarely come to the ground. Diet: In captivity they eat soft-shelled crickets, baby food (apricot), commercial day gecko food, and an occasional honey droplet. Too much honey will make them obese or overweight. In the wild they eat bugs and flower-nectar. Behavior: When scared or uncomfortable the day geckos beautiful emerald color darkens into a black color. Reproduction: Like all lizards, Day geckos can live solitary lives. However when they mate they need to be compatible with their mate. A few weeks after they mate the female chooses a tight crevice between a leaf and its stem to lay her eggs. She lays two soft sticky eggs. When the eggs dry they stick to the leaf and cant be moved. Because of the warm, humid climate of Madagascar the eggs need no incubation and hatch within about 90 days. |
