Hawaiian Monk Seal
| Have you ever seen this animal? The Hawaiian Monk seal's color is gray on black to brownish. The food it eats is fish, octopus, eel, and lobster. It is found in northwestern part of the Hawaiian Islands. The Latin name is monachus schauini. It is a mammal. They are in endangered because seals often get tangled in nets in the oceans. Aggressive males will attack females until they are badly injured or even killed. This is the primary cause of death in some populations of monk seals. You might be interested to know more about seals. Baby seals are called pups. If a human comes too close to the pups the mother seal will abandon the pups. The female seal avoids beaches where the water gets deep enough to allow sharks to catch them! |
