Mauritius Pink Pigeon
| The Mauritius Pink Pigeon is very special. The Mauritius Pink Pigeon has light pink feathers, brown wings, dark pink bill, legs and feet with dark brown tail. If you have ever seen one you are lucky. They are very rare. They are about 26-32 centimeters in size, and weigh about 0.35 kilograms. The male are slightly smaller. It lives in gorge areas on the island of Mauritius. Columbidae is the family it is in. It's Latin name is Nesoenas Niayeri. It eats flowers, fruits, buds, leaves, and seeds. I hope you can see why it is special. The Pink Pigeon is endangered for a few reasons. For one, non-native animals like macaques, Feral cats, and black rats prey on them. They also die out because cyclones hit them. Cyclones are a large twisting storm that carries away anything in it's way. As you see there are a few reasons why this animal is endangered. There are many other interesting facts about the Mauritius Pink Pigeon. It builds it's nest 13-59 feet up in trees! Males are slightly smaller then females. (Probably to protect the nest.) Also in the 1993 the population of the wild birds was only about 21 birds! Now they think there are about 250 birds. The Mauritius Pink Pigeon is as doomed as the dodo to extinction. So you see there are many interesting facts about this animal. |
