Bulmer's Fruit Bat
| This is the largest of bats and one of the most important to humans. Many of the fruit and vegetables we enjoy on our table would not exist without these bats. This is because they spread the seeds and pollinate the flowers of many plants. These bats usually suck on the flower and fruit then swallow the nector or juice and spit out the remaining pulp. The male bat lives with eight female bats. The fruit weighs 1.3 inches. Bulmer's fruit bat is a cave dweller and adult female bat weighs 600 grams. This bat likes to eat figs. Its latin name is aproteles bulmer's. Fossils have been found that are 12,00 years old in Papa New Guinea. They were thought to be extinct but found again in 1975. They found 160 back in a cave. Hunting and human disturbance have caused their decline. I think its interesting to know that bats wrap their wings around there body. They cannot land very well. Sometimes they can fly, but they crash into branches. |
