Red Wolf
| Have you ever seen a red wolf? Its Latin name is Rufus Canis. The family group is Canidan. Its natural habitat is Coastal prairie and marsh areas. It is now found to be extinct in the wild. The size is smaller then the gray wolf and large then the coyote. The color is cinnamon red. It likes to eat white tailed deer, raccoon but will eat any small animal. There are three problems that change the life of the red wolf. One of the problems is the loss of habitat, also the hunting of wolves and red wolf mating with coyote. The expansion of agriculture, logging and human settlement cleared the forest home of red wolves. There are many other things you can learn about the red wolf. Between 1900-1920 red wolves were hunted because they preyed on cattle. As the population of red wolf decline, coyote expanded into it territory. Today the red wolf population is at 300 captive animals in zoos and captive breeding facilities. Red wolves have been reintroduced at the Alligator River National Carolina and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. |
