Poison Arrow Frogs

Have you ever seen a poison arrow frog? A poison frog's Latin name is Dendrobates Auratus. It is also called a dart frog. Its found in Costa Rica, Panama, and N.W. Colombia. They live in the trees of the tropical rain forest. It eats small animals such as flies, maggots, caterpillars and other small animals. It'' skin is black and green to azure blue. It is an amphibian and a poikloherm. This means the temperature of their body is affected by their surroundings.

It is threatened because, as all tropical animals, its habitats are endangered. It is endangered because people use them for pets. People, snakes, birds, and bats kill them. Some Indians use them to tip arrows. And they do not migrate or hibernate so they can get eaten by other animals.

We do not want this animal to become extinct from our planet because they add color to the rain forest. They are friends to the other poison frogs. They keep away the bad animals and the chemicals in their skin can be important.

Did you know? They are active during the day but quiet at night. One small frog can produce up to 50 arrows with poison. The poison is completely harmless when taking orally. An amount of poison smaller than a grain of salt can kill a human.
