A crayfish lives in the rivers and lakes of all Europe. A lot of species are known.
It is about 15cm long. Its soft body is covered and protected by strong armour which is undressed usualy in August because it does not grow.
The crayfish often changes its colour - it called MIMICRY : a superficial resemblance of one organism to another or to natural objects among which it lives that secures it a selective advantage (as protection from predators).

The crayfish has 5 pairs of legs. In the first pair there are very strong claws. Its backside is very agile. In the case of a dangerous it strikes off with it rapidly to ground and it swims back quickly. It has 2 pairs of feelers in the head. On the end of ones it has eyes on stems. The eyes can turn him round. It sees well also behind its.

It likes to lie and ambush in the centre of roots or in the holes for its prey. It feeds on putrefy organisms but it also catches both the tadpoles and molluscs lived.

It lives several years decades - 20 to 50 years.

It may live in the clear and fresh water only. In that case an amounth of crafishes decrease. There are only 2 places in Divina surrouning where we know that the crayfishes still live. We'll try to make the photographs after crayfish wintersleeping.

Een rivierkreeft leeft in rivieren en meren in geheel Europa. Er zijn verschillende soorten bekend. Het dier is ongeveer 15 cm. lang. Het zachte lichaam is bedekt en beschermd door een sterk pantser. In augustus is dit meestal weg, omdat het niet meegroeit.
De rivierkreeft verandert vaak van kleur. Dit is z'n vermomming: een vluchtige overeenkomst met andere organismen of met de omgeving waar het op dat moment verkeert (als bescherming tegen roofdieren).

De rivierkreeft heeft 5 paar poten. Aan het eerste paar zitten hele sterke klauwen. Z'n achterwerk is heel erg lenig. In momenten van gevaar slaat het heel snel terug en zwemt snel achterwaarts. Het heeft twee paar "voelers" op de kop. Op één paar daarvan zitten de ogen op een stengel. De ogen kunnen in de rondte draaien. Zo kan het ook achter zich kijken.

Het houdt ervan om in een hinderlaag te liggen tussen rotsen of in holen. Het eet halfvergane prooien maar het vangt ook levende kikkervisjes en weekdieren.

Het wordt tussen de 20 en 50 jaar oud.

Het kan alleen in schoon en fris water leven. Anders neemt het aantal rivierkreeften af. Er zijn slechts 2 plaatsen in Divina, voor zover bij ons bekend, waar rivierkreeften nog voorkomen. We zullen proberen om na hun winterslaap foto's te maken.
