Manatees
Did you know that manatees are mammals? They weigh about 1,000 pounds or 450 kilograms. Manatees are grayish-brown. They have a very big head and long whiskers. They have strong teeth, two holes called nostrils, and a tail shaped like paddles called flippers. Manatees live in shallow waters around Florida. Some manatees live in fresh water, salt water rivers and lakes. They eat mostly plants. Manatees usually have only 1 calf a year. The calf weighs about 27 to 31 kilograms or 70 pounds. Manatees don’t have animal enemies. One enemy is people’s boats. Other enemies are trash, factories, and chemicals. Manatees are endangered because of people’s boats. The exact number of manatees is 3, 000. We can help by making a sanctuary and a law. |
