What animal lays a dozen eggs at one time? An owl does. There are 18 different kinds of owls. Owls have sharp talons and big bright eyes. Owls have short tails and long wings. Owls can be 33 inches long. They can be gray, tan and brown. Owls begin to fly when they are 65 days old. Owls walk with their talons which are like claws. Owls live in the United States and Canada. They live in forests, and in deserts. Owls live in every continent but Antarctica. Owls eat small animals like mice, rats, birds, rabbits, snakes, insects, skunks, crabs and fish. Owls eat their prey whole. Owls’ predators are hawks. Owls are protected by the law. Men cannot kill owls.
Owls are endangered. An owl’s babies are hatched at different times. Owls have fuzzy feathers. Did you know that owls don’t make nests? They take over a hawk, eagle or crow’s nest. Owls live in big holes in trees. Some owls hunt at night and sleep all day. Owls can see in the morning. Owls can see better at night than morning. Owls can almost see in total darkness.
