Seals
Did you know that human divers can go 45 meters or 150 feet and the elephant seal can reach depths of about 300 meters, which is 1,000 feet. There are different kinds of seals. There is the sea lion, eared seal, earless and the elephant seal. Seals are gray, have a smooth body and are sleek. Sometimes they have ears and sometimes they don’t. They have whiskers, large brown eyes and flippers. Seals live in the ocean, Arctic, New Foundland, and beaches of California. A seal baby is born one at a time. A baby can be born in late winter. The den is under the snow. The mother seal stays with the baby for one month. A seal baby is born one at a time. A baby can be born in late winter. The den is under the snow. Scientists know how old the seal is by the teeth. The seal can move by diving and swimming. They are superb swimmers and they use flippers. Seals communicate by barking. Seals eat fish, sea creatures, krill, crabs, clams, whelks, and shrimp. Seals are endangered because people are killing them for skin and food. Seals are also endangered by pollution in lakes and seas. |
