Tigers

Did you know most tigers are nocturnal? The tigers’ ears help alert them to their prey because the tigers can hear lots of animals around them. Tigers also have very good eyesight. They can see far into the woods. Tigers’ relatives are jaguars, leopards, and lions. All of the tigers are in the cat family. Tigers have orange or white fur with either brown or black stripes.
Tigers are usually blue-eyed. Siberian tigers weigh up to 700 pounds. Bengal male tigers weigh up to 450 pounds. Female Bengal tigers weigh up to 300 pounds. A lot of the tigers have very long whiskers. The tigers can reach up to 13 feet long. Tigers live in India and other Asian countries. They live far back in the woods close to lots of trees. They can roar to attract a female tiger. Tigers run to catch their prey. Sometimes tigers swim in a river to travel. Every tiger eats up to 55 pounds a meal and still has more room for food in it’s stomach. All the kind of animals tigers eat are pig, deer, antelope, buffalo, elk, moose, and bear. They even could eat a huge wild cow! About every two years, tigers have 2 or 3 cubs. Tiger cubs weigh up to 3 pounds. Newborn cubs are blind. Cubs nurse for five or six months.
Tiger cubs attack any animal that comes close. Cubs learn how to kill by watching their parents. They begin killing some of their own prey at 2 years old. Tigers in the zoo can reach the age of 25. Tigers are endangered by people cutting down trees. Wild tigers are killed each year for their fur and body parts. Farmers kill tigers because they think the tigers will kill the farm animals. Today fewer than 5,000 tigers still exist.
