Blue Whales
Did you know that people use to kill blue whales for their blubber to make oil? One average blue whale can make between 10 and 20 tons of oil. A blue whale is a mammal. A blue whales scientific name is Balaenopteramusculus. A blue whale is 100 feet long. Blue whales weigh 155 tons. A blue whale has 300 baleen teeth. Blue whales are dark slate blue with light flecks of pale. Blue whales live in the Antarctic Ocean. North Pacific, and North Atlantic. Blue whales move by swimming. A blue whale goes underwater with it’s tail out and makes a loud sound to communicate with other whales. Blue whales have 1 to 2 babies at a time. A baby blue whale is almost full grown and they are 23 feet long. They weigh 5 tons. They drink their mom’s milk for six months and they grow 200 pounds and 2 inches a day. Blue whales eat tons of krill and plankton each day. They are the largest animals that ever lived. They breath out of a blowhole. Blue whales are killed for their blubber. In 1868 whalers made the harpoon gun and the whales could not get away. This is just one reason why they are endangered today. . |
