Common Name : Southern Right Whale

Scientific Name : Eubalaena australis

Habitat :
During Spring and Summer the whales move into the deper water surrounding Antarctica. In Autumn they move to the shallow waters near Australia, South Africa and South America.

Diet :
Eats plankton and smaller fish. They sometimes feed on bottom dwelling molluscs.

Size :
Some grow to 18metres but most are about 15metres with an average weight of 55 tonnes.

Danger :

Mechanised whale hunting reduced their numbers to very near extinction.
