The Atlantic Green Sea Turtle

The Atlantic Green Sea Turtle’s scientific name is Chelonia Mydas. It eats seaweed, green algae, mollusks, crustaceans and jellyfish. Its status is threatened. It lives in shallow ocean waters inside reefs, bays and inlets. Some Atlantic Green Sea Turtles get killed when they are young and others live up to be 50 years or more. Its size 35-48 inches and its colors are dark brown and olive green and its shape is oval. Seventy-five to 200 young are born at a time. They don’t take care of their young. They migrate to where they are going to nest. After they find a place to nest, they dig a hole. Then the female lays the eggs then she leaves.

These are some interesting facts: It has been estimated that Atlantic Green Sea Turtles migrate with precise navigation up to 1,400 miles between nesting beaches and feeding areas. They seem to make use of a sun/compass orientation similar to that of bees. The common name of this animal is the Atlantic Green Sea Turtle. This is the range of the Atlantic Green Sea Turtle along the North American coast from Massachusetts to Mexico and from British Columbia to California. Major nesting grounds are in Mexico, Costa Rica, Guyana, Suriname and Ares Island off Dominica, in the West Indies. In the United States, small nesting populations occur on the eastern coast of Florida.
