In Captivity #2| I totally disagree that animals should be in captivity. I think it
is very sad watching those poor animals in cages or glassed in boxes. Sometimes it kind of
makes me mad in a way, because, what did those poor animals do to us that that deserve to
be in a zoo or a circus etc... Animals die everyday due to them being in captivity. Let's put a stop to all captivity and return those beautiful animals back to their natural habitats. In an article I read called Orca Whales - Dying to entertain you, it really got me mad. It said of 134 Orcas recently taken into captivity in recent years, 102 of them are now dead. It also said on average the Orcas survive an average of 5 years in captivation. But, when in the wild female Orcas like up to 50 years! And Males, 29 years! But hopefully that will all change soon. The 10 year old whale and dolphin conservation Society (WDCS) wants to take all captive Orcas out of captivity. They said, "Why take these beautiful creatures away from their families and their natural habitats just to entertain people" and to me I think that is very true! In another article I read, it said, "While we are getting entertainment we also have to be concerned about the animals well-being and safety. They also said, " We need to improve their condition of things such as cages, food, nicer zoo keepers, removing animals from cages or small enclosures, designing a more open spaced, natural habitat look by making environmental enrichment mandatory of all animals." Even though we want to remove the concept of captive wildlife, in the meantime it is a reality - lets deal with it and make the best out of the situation. In yet another article I read from the internet, it said "Some bears in captivity are fed hundreds and maybe even thousands of marshmallows a day by visitors to the zoo. And to me that is VERY unhealthy to any animal! It also said that whale tanks were not only tiny, but filthy, and reindeer were also mistreated and over fed by thousands of non thinking visitors of the zoo, when I read that it got me quit mad! You would think that all the money that zoos make would go towards the animals, but it doesn't. Zoo Check Canada is nationally known for helping endangered and captive animals get back to their natural habitats. Only about 10% of all zoo space is put aside for endangered species, and the release of animals back into wildlife in minimal and often unsuccessful therefore dooming animals to permanent captivity. They also believe that by people going to zoo's they are supporting zoo's to keep the animals in captivity. Some zoo's in the world allow animals to breed freely because cute little cubs will attract large audiences which leads to more revenue, the problem is, when summer is over the cubs increase in size and food consumptions become more costly, so the zoo keepers kill them. I was so sad when I heard that, I was also shocked. That is just so cruel! One reason zoo's like panda bear so mush is because the cute cuddly looking animals rack in literally millions of dollars for zoo's and are rented out by the Chinese government for $1,000,000 each. Animals can be abused physically or mentally and people would not even know it. If they stay in captivity too long, some animals may get hurt or upset and hurt another animal or a person. I have to admit, there are some reasons that are good for animals to be captive such as the endangered species. We definently need them in captivity before they become extinct. Maybe if an animal is sick and they need help, zoo keepers could help them, as to if they were in the wilderness, they couldn't. As far as peoples entertainment goes, I'm sure lots of people enjoy going to circuses and going to zoo's and watching animal, whatever the case maybe, I still think that most animals should be let back into the wild, that is most definently the right thing to do. I am concluding my report by saying, that when I started studying this topic, I found out alot more about it, and now if someone ever asks me, "Do you know anything about wild animals in captivity", I can simply reply with a, " Yes". Once again, I think it is very wrong for people to just take animals away from their families and their natural habitats. I am happy that many people are fighting against taking animals out of captivity and I hope that I have convinced you that animal captivation is wrong. |
