the leatherback sea turtle
| My animal is the leatherback sea turtle. The scientific
name is the Dermochelys Coriacea.
The leatherback sea turtle is a reptile. It is also a vertebrate, which means it has a backbone. There was only 50 left by 1993. The leatherback lifespan is for about 80 years and gets up to about 6.5 feet. The average weight for a sea turtle is 1,400 pounds. It ranges throughout all of the oceans. The turtle's shell is made up of hundreds of bony plates and covered with leathery skin. As a baby it is about 4 inches long. Its main food is jellyfish and his secondary food is mostly water invertebrate. The sea turtle lays up to 100 to 150 eggs at a time. The thing that has been killing them the most are nets. To help the turtles would ban fishing from certain places and put up a helping program so they could rebuild and produce more turtles. |
