Key Largo Woodrat
| Did you know our furry friend the Key Largo woodrat is endangered? It's
a medium sized rodent with a white belly, chest, feet and throat. The head and back are gray.
The woodrat was first discovered endangered on August 31, 1984 with 6,500. The woodrat has a diet of leaves, buds and fruit of many plant species. It lives in mature, tropical hardwood hammocks and builds its nest of mostly sticks, which protect it from predators. The woodrat has about 1 to 4 babies born at a time, with an average of two. This animal does not migrate. They like to raid campsites. They're known as packrats because they steal small shiny items and leave a leaf or stick in its place. The woodrat used to range throughout Key Largo. It is now only able to survive in the northern one third of Key Largo because of destruction, alteration and construction in the hardwood hammocks where it lives. I would try and raise money to stop the construction to try and save it. |
