Ivory-Billed Woodpecker
| Now you are going to learn about the Ivory-billed
woodpecker. It’s family is the birds. It lives in the southeast ,but mostly in Florida, Louisiana and eastern Texas.
It’s vertebrate category is birds .It’s common name is ivory-billed woodpecker, and it’s scientific name is campephilus principalis . My animal is extinct . As of December 18,1979 there were 89 left. The Ivory-billed woodpecker weighs about 20 oz. , and is about 46 to 50 cm long. It’s mostly black ,with white wing patches and a white stripe running down both sides of the neck. With brilliant red crest. It’s habitat is old-age forests and bottom land swaps. It doesn’t migrate, and it’s lifespan is unknown. They eat dead wood insects or other insects and turits. Family life is the dad bird takes over the nest at night when the female bird looks for food , the baby bird stays with it’s parents for at least 8 months . There are 1 to 5 young eggs born at once , at least once per. year . At night the dad watches over the nest and the mom looks for food for the baby her and the dad. Here some unusual or
little know facts: The ivory-billed woodpecker is extinct because when it was alive people were killing it. Consequences of this animal disappearing ,my animal is already gone. What is being done to protect the woodpecker ? I couldn’t find what was being done before it disappeared. Current issues or controversies happening in my area . No ,I don’t thing so ,but it is gone so nothing can be done to help it. The date it was first listed on the big list was December 18,1979. Now just because it’s extinct it still makes a great project. Now if you would like to know go look it up . Here are some of the references I used : Internet Internet and last but not least a book Encyclopedia Britannica #5pg.479. Now I hope you enjoyed my report on the ivory-billed woodpecker . |
