Ask Jeeves Answer: Washingtonpost.com:A Racial Tug of War Over Census- 10. Corbis- Digital Pictures: Make All Your Ideas Picture Perfect- A wood stork is a bird. It lives in the southeastern parts of United States. It is classified as an invertebrate belongs to the category of bird. Its common name is wood stork and scientific name is Mycteria Americana. It belongs to the endangered species group. There is about 7,000-10,000 Wood storks remain on earth now. The average weight of a wood stork is about 7 pounds. It can grow up to 3-ft in height with 5-ft wingspan. They live in freshwaters, brackish wetlands, and marshes. Wood storks migrate to South America. They are white, black, yellow (beak), and blackish-gray (head). Most wood storks can live up to 10 years. Wood storks mostly eat fish. But they also eat crabs, turtles, large bugs, small alligators, and snakes. If there are 2-5 young wood storks per nest, it is considered a successful colony. Here are some interesting facts. Many wood storks die of hunger. But some people also hunt it for its feathers. It was first listed in the protective list on 1984. This is how I would like to save the wood stork. I would send wood storks to zoos where they would not die of hunger and not be hunted. Also I would hang up signs telling people not to hunt for wood storks. Now how would try to save the wood stork if you could? I hope you enjoyed my report on wood storks and learned a little bit about the wood stork and why they are endangered. |
