The American Crocodile
| The American Crocodile lives in southern Florida. Its scientific name
is crocodytus acutus.
It has scales, sharp teeth and short stubby legs. It weighs up to 2,000 pounds. Its length is up to 20 feet. Its scales are olive gray with darker markings. It can live up to 100 years old. It belongs to the family alligatorinae. It is commercially threatened. It eats insects, snakes, turtles, snails, slow moving fishes, small mammals, birds, small calves and very rarely, people. It lays 30-60 eggs every 3 months. Some appeared 65 million years ago! Pollution and their valuable skin threaten them. But, a law has been passed in 1970 to prevent hunting. I would like to protect it by not polluting and recycle. |
