The Gulf Sturgeon
| The Gulf Sturgeon The following info was found at Endangered Species; U.S. Fish and Wildlife at http://endangered.few.gov/rtspndx.html and Dogpile.com. The Gulf sturgeon (acipenseroryrinchus desotoi) is a fish that lives from the Gulf of Mexico to the North Atlantic. It is listed a threatened species with only 2,250 to 3,000 known to exist. It is an anadromou fish with a sub-cylindrical body imbedded with bony plates called scutes. It is light to dark brown and can reach lengths of 8 feet and weighs more than 200 pounds. It lives 3 to 4 months in Gulf waters and 8 to 9 months in rivers. It migrates to the Suwannee River and rivers around it. It eats small creatures and plants and can live longer than 28 years. They lay about 5 million eggs and stay in the rivers for a few more months before heading back to Gulf waters. They are disappearing from the earth because of dams, habitat destruction and degradation, over-exploitation, lowering of river elevations, elimination of deep holes and a decrease in ground water flows. Organization efforts and commercial harvest begin made illegal have contributed to the protection of the Gulf sturgeon. It was first listed on the protective list Septembe 30, 1991. We can help Gulf sturgeon by not buying caviar, trying not to pollute the water and support groups that help he Gulf sturgeon. That concludes my report on the Gulfturgeon and hope you learned something new. |
