Marionville Missouri
The town of Marionville is well known for its population of white squirrels.
In 1968 a city ordinance was passed to protect these squirrels.
It is illegal to "attempt or help somebody to shoot, catch,
kill, trap, injure, cage or have a white squirrel in
possession." The white squirrel has the
right of way on all streets and
sidewalks.
The white squirrels have lived in Marionville since the 1860s.
Several stories have circulated as to how they came to be
in our town. The most exotic story is that of a circus
train wreck releasing them into the community.
Despite the differences on their arrival, much
is made to preserve their existence in
Marionville Missouri.
The local Lions Club has a white squirrel project that has built
den boxes and placed them in trees for the squirrels. The Missouri
Conservation Department has distributed around 3000 seedling
trees over the years to provide a habitat for the squirrels.
Local citizens put out corn, sunflower seeds
and water for the squirrels.
Their population is not known. But if you ever happen upon
Marionville Missouri, the best time to see our white
squirrels is in the early morning or late in the day.
Y'all come see us!
