The Manatee

manatee

HABITAT
Manatees inhabit salt and freshwaters of sufficient depth throughout the range and they may be encountered in canals, rivers, esturine habitat, salt water bays bays, and on occasion have been observed 3.7 miles off the Florida Gulf Coast. Between October and April, Florida manatees concentrate in areas of warmer waters and when water temperatures drop below about 21 to 22 degrees Celsius, they migrate to South Florida.

PREDATOR/PREY
Manatees weigh 1,000 to 3,000 pounds and use 5 hours a day eating and consume 4 to 9 percent of their body weight a day. Manatees are herbivores and eat shallow water marine plants. People kill manatees every day by polluting, boat acidences, and people killing them for meat.

ANIMAL FACTS
The manatee has forelimbs and hindlimbs. The manatee loves to eat plants. Manatee babies love to play around. Manatees also weigh 1,000 to 3,000 pounds. The estimate in Puerto Rico is 60 to 100. The estimate in the United States is 1,865. The manatee's nickname is sea cow.

WHAT CAN WE DO?
To help manatees from being extinct we can stop polluting their homes, stop killing them for meat, and stop bringing motor boats into their homes. Manatees deserve to live a good clean life. Save a manatee's life, don't pollute, kill them, and take away their home.
