The Sea Otter

otter

ANIMAL FACTS
Sea Otters are interesting animals. They are one and one half meters long and in water they are shaped like a rectangle. It is a brown furry mammalian. They are very good swimmers.

HABITAT
They live at sea near rocks, reefs, small islands, and rocky coast. Kelps are comfortable beds for them to sleep in at night. They are in the Pacific Ocean and some live in Central California. The California population is still small, around 2,000 spread over only 226 km of Central California's  coastlines. The reason of the endangerment of the sea otter is that people kill them for their fur. They also can die from a certain kind of oil getting on their fur and skin. In the early 1900's the Sea Otter was almost extinct.

PREDATOR/PREY
Sea Otters eat Sea Urchins, muscle, crabs snails, limpets, and fish. The Sea Otter's predators are the killer whales, humans, and sharks.

WHAT CAN WE DO?
To help save the hunting we can support the World Wildlife Fund or write a letter to your governor asking him about stopping the hunting of the sea otter because there is only about 2,000 left.
