Prairie Chickens and the Prairie in Illinois
By Mrs. Vanderhoof's Third Grade Class and
Mrs. Volk's Fourth Grade Science Classes

Our classes have been studying the prairie chicken and prairies in Illinois, both past and present. We have a prairie chicken sanctuary in our county. Once abundant in Illinois, prairie chickens are now a state endangered species. The conservationist from the sanctuary visited our classes in the spring and again this fall. Some of the students had the opportunity to visit the Illinois State Museum and spend the day with the scientists there learning about the Illinois prairie and prairie chickens. We also studied Illinois birds using Illinois Department of Conservation's Illinois Birds unit. The students have written reports about what they have learned. Projects connected with this unit will also be shown.
