River Otter

| The River Otter from
Nebraska. Our animal is the Otter and it is cool. It is
10-25 lbs. It's brown and gray. The river otter slides
down river banks. It lives in North America and is native
to Nebraska. Their habitat is there. The Otter eats
crayfish, frogs and other fish. It is a meat eater. Its
special thing to do is to stay under water for some
hours. A Mink is smaller but a Beaver which is flat and
heavy with a hairless tail is slower in movement. It can
have two babies at a time . It's a kind of weasel if you
want to. The mother picks the fish. Fur trappers caused
the near - extinction of otters in Nebraska. In 1986, the
river otter was listed as an endangered species. The
Games and Parks Commission has the responsibility to
restore the otter population to Nebraska. Game wardens
brought 20 otters from other states and released them on
seven rivers throughout the state. All signs tell us that
the otters are thriving in their new home. People can
help by reporting sightings of otters to the Games and
Parks Commission. We hope to be able to one day remove
them from the endangered species list. |
