Grey Bat

There are 900-1000 species of bats. The bat's wingspan can range from less than 2 inches to over 5 feet. They are in nearly all parts of the world but most numerous in the tropics. There are about 39 species in the United States. Most bats are economical because of the large number of insects they consume.
The body of the bat is mouse-like usually covered with fine fur. The ears of the bat are often very elaborately convoluted. Some bats are solitary, living in caves, hollow trees, or attics.
Other species are communal with thousands even millions of bats roosting in a cave, on branches, in a section of forest. In species communal bats the entire colony leaves the roost together in the evening, returning in the morning. In others, individuals come and at different times. Bats of northern regions migrate or hibernate, or do both in the winter.
In most species, males and females do not associate during the season. Females of the species bear a single baby in the summer each year.
The babies begin to fly in a few weeks. The life span of bats is 20 years in captivity.
