Bald Eagle

The bald eagle is one of a kind. It's a beautiful bird with its yellow eyes but not long ago the American Bald Eagle, the national bird of the United States, was in danger of extinction in most of the country.
There were as many as 75,000 bald eagles once in the continental United States. By the 1970's there were only a few thousand, perhaps not even that many left.
Thanks to the government they were put on the endangered species list. Now the bald eagle population is again increasing. They are beginning to show up in places where they have not been seen in years. It will still be many years before the species completely recovers from the effect of human intervention in its environment. When you see a bald eagle just look at it and think, just think, of how close it came to being
extinct.
Many bald eagles live in and near Yellowstone National Park in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. During the summer, 90% of their diet is fish. When the lakes and rivers freeze the eagles use another source of food.
They catch waterfowl and feed on dead elk, deer and bison.
