Pygmy chimps are found in rain forests in central Africa between Zaire and Kasai Rivers.
The difference between common chimps and Pygmy chimps is not their size, it is their features. Pygmy chimps have longer legs, a lighter build and a more rounded head than common chimps. They also have a dark face, and most common chimps have a light face. Chimpanzees are about the same size as a ten-year-old child. Chimps are about a metre (over 3 feet) tall with a few growing to 1.7 metres (5-1/2 feet). Adult males usually weigh 99 to 176 lbs. The females are shorter and lighter.
Chimps sometimes make two beds a day. One is for their afternoon nap and the other is for when they go to sleep at night. They make their beds out of branches, small twigs and leaves. Chimpanzees live in communities of 15 to 80 members. They travel in smaller groups that are constantly changing.
Pygmy chimpanzees eat fruit, leaves, seeds and bark. Fruit is one of the chimps favorite foods to eat. Within their territory chimps know the exact location of different fruit trees. As well as vegetation, chimps also eat bird eggs, insects and honey. Once in a while they eat antelopes, birds, bush pigs and even monkeys.
Although chimpanzees can walk upright, they only do so if they are angry. When chimps are on the ground they usually "knuckle walk" that is they walk on all fours, but support the front of their body on their knuckles not their palms.
Chimps use their fingers and lips to groom each other. They pick through each others' hair to remove dirt, burrs or insects. Adult chimps spend an hour a day grooming.
Chimpanzees have keen senses. They have large ears which help them hear tiny sounds. They have very good eyesight and a keen sense of smell.
Chimpanzees seem to have many of the same emotions as humans. They can feel happy, sad, angry or frightened. They show their feelings in many ways. They use sounds such as hoots, grunt and whimpers. They also have facial expressions, smiles and pouts. Chimpanzees are sociable animals they often hug and kiss, hold hands and pat each other on the back.
