The Pipping Plover
| The name of the animal this report is on is the
pipping plover. The scientific name is charadruis melons. The family the pipping plover
belongs to is the bird family. The plover was threatened in 1978. In this report is
information on the plover like it's food, appearance, habitat, threats and interesting
facts. Someone should read this report because there is a lot of information you could use
to learn about an endangered animal. The pipping plover has some strange looks. When it's in the water looking for swimming food (fish) the plover has a small visible web between it's toes to help it swim. All pipping plovers upper parts are brownish gray. Around the pipping plover is a black breast bank which is a popular sight on the plover. The front part of it's forehead is clear white. It's underparts are white. Depending where the plover lives, they always start off to nest on sandy or gravily beaches. It lives and feeds by salt and fresh waters. In Canada there are many places where it lives. Some are central Alberta, southern Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba, southern Ontario, southern Quebec, New Brunswick, PEI, and Newfoundland. They live by river sand bars or rivers with a sandy bottom. Ocean coasts can be a place where the plover feeds and lives. The plover pecks along the shoreline looking for shellfish like oysters, clams and more. Sometimes it will walk into the water to look for minnows or small fish night and day. When there are lots of insects the plover will try to catch one in its beak. If the plover was flying, falcons would swoop down very fast and grab the plover in it's talons. Crows are capable of taking the eggs and breaking them open. Skunks and raccoons at night will kill the plover's eggs and also the mother plover. Gulls as every knows live by the shore line and peck at the plover's eggs. People who have cottage use beaches which disturb plovers. Plovers lose their habitat by the use of beaches. When plovers lay 4 eggs in a group we call these clutches. The plover only lives for 14 years buy may only survive for less than 5 years. Plovers may pretend to be injured to lead a predator away from the nest. By Jeffrey
