The Peregrine Falcon
| The name of the animal this research report is on is
called the Peregrine Falcon. The scientific name of it is falco peregrinus. The Peregrine
belongs to the bird family. The status of the Peregrine is endangered. My report is about
the food, the appearance, the interesting facts, the threats and the habitat of the
Peregrine. You should read this report because it can help you save the Peregrine Falcon. The Peregrine Falcon has the same appearance all year long. The adult Peregrine has a black crown on its hind neck and face. It has a black moustache mark. The upper wing is black with ashy blue slate bars. The wings underside is white with black bars. The adult also has brown bars on its thigh and side. It has black tail bars. The under parts are white to pinkish and there are spots on its abdomen. The female weighs 952 grams and male weights 611 grams. The young are brownish because they haven't grown much yet. The habitat of the Peregrine is all over Canada. The peregrine builds its nest on cliffs, cliff tops, city buildings, and quarries. The nesting area is almost always defended. They hunt 27 kilometers or less around the nest. It's nests are usually around southern Ontario and British Columbia. The food of the Peregrine is mostly small birds. The Peregrine eats pigeons and sparrows. It also eats other small birds. The Peregrine also attacks migratory shore birds like plovers and killdeer. It is on top of the bird food chain. The Peregrine Falcon hunts down its prey by dive bombing on the prey. It eats the prey in mid air. The Peregrine Falcon has many man made threats. The destruction of breeding sites and the area around is the main threat. There are not many people who still do game hunting but it is still making their numbers decline. Pesticides are another main threat to the Peregrine but the most deadly pesticides is organochlorine compounds. Not many people still collect eggs from the Peregrine but it is still a threat. The Peregrine has many interesting facts about itself. It is the world's fastest hunter. The Peregrine Falcon speeds more than 250 km per hour and sometimes faster. When it is flying the height above the ground is usually 600 metres. Most Peregrines mate for life. The Peregrine falcon is the world's swiftest bird. The life span of a mating Peregrine is 4 to 5 years but an individuals live much longer. By Keri
