The Peary Caribou
| The name of my animal is Peary caribou. The family it
belongs is the deer family. The Peary caribou status is that it is threatened. The
scientific name that some people call it is rangifer tarandus peary. In my report there is
food, appearance, habitat, threats, and interesting facts. People can learn about the
animal by reading the report. The Peary caribou looks like a big moose, has white heavy fur, a large muzzle, short broad ears and big crescent shaped hooves. It also has antlers like a moose. The Peary caribou has a lot of habitats in the Arctic, Queen Elizabeth Island and in coastal northwest Greenland, In winter caribou like to live on ground with shallow snow or ice. In summer Peary caribou go where there is lots of plants like river valleys and rock outcrops. Caribou has a lot of trouble getting their food because it is all frozen in the snow or ice. They eat twigs in the winter bark and mossy plants in the warmer weather. The Peary caribou is not protected again threats. The Peary caribou became endangered in 1979. It's habitat is not protected either. Also, they are dying of starvation. The Peary caribou is threatened by wolves and Inuit. People do not know that the Peary caribou is the deer family. They also lose their antlers. The antlers grow back in about 1 year. Females and males grow antlers and they both lose them at about the same time. The Peary caribou is also known as a reindeer. It travels up to 2600 kilometers in a year. Their hooves work like snow shoes and they are strong swimmers. Peary caribou live in herds. By Leslie
