Javan Rhinoceros
| One endangered animal is the Javan rhino. It lives in low rain forest in Zimbabwe and it is a big mammal. The Greek name rhino meaning "nose" and ceros meaning "horn" and sunda meaning "java". The Javan rhino is 11-14 feet long. It is 4-6 feet tall. It can weight 2000-3000 pounds. It has a wrinkly neck and one large horn in the middle of his nose. It gestates for 2 months. It gives birth to one live baby. Its main enemy is poachers, because some cultures believe its horn can be made in to medicine. Its main protection is its horn and armor. It uses the horn to scare away predators. The armor plating keeps claws and teeth from harming it. It adapts to the hot climate by wallowing in the mud. There are 3 in a family. It spins its tail in a circle to fan its self and to keep the fly’s away. Its young walk under the male and female. Since there is only 60-70 left they are very endangered. It is important that people learn more about them and try to keep them safe from poachers. |
