Most of his food is bamboo, but somtimes he eats birdeggs or insects. A panda sleep and eat all day and night. When he awakens, he search for fresh bamboo, and when he has enough, he goes back to sleep. They don`t have a wintersleep, so in the winter they also has to search for food, and that ain`t easy. Every winter panda`s die because they can not find enough food. Panda`s has a strange way of eating. They bring the food to their mouth, just like a squirrel. Other animals bring their mouth to the food (for example a horse or a cow). A grow up panda needs 15 kilo bamboo a day. Once in 80-120 years the bamboo get flowers, after the flowering the bamboo dies. It takes a while before the new bamboo has grow. In this period the panda`s don`t have much to eat. A lot of panda`s die. [ go to summary ] . |

| HOW DO THEY
REPRODUCTIVE ?
The panda lives alone, never in a groep. But in pairing-time the male search for a female. They use their sense of smell. When a male smell a female, he follow the track, and then he start to make a noise , so he get the attention of the female. If they like each other, they start to mate. After that, they go their own way. The birth. The time to carry a unborn panda is between 4 and 5 months. The mother is searching a cave, were the new baby-panda can be born. Most of the time a panda is born in autumn. Mostly one, sometimes two. Then the mother takes care of the strongest panda and leave the other one alone. That one always die. A baby-panda is only 15-17 cm tall and his weight is 90-120 gram. You can hold him in one hand. A newborn grows very fast. At his first anniversary his weight will be 25 kilo. After he is born, his fleece is totally white, a few weeks later the black color will appear. A newborn panda is blind and can not walk. It takes 3 months to see and crawl. When the panda is about 6 months, he is leaving his mother and takes care of hisself. At the age of 5 or 6 years he is a addult. Now he is able to make new panda`s. It is unknow which age they can reach. [ go to summary ] . |

HOW DO PANDA`S LIVE IN A ZOO ? There are not many panda`s living in a zoo, about 100. The first panda who was captive alive was on november 9 1936 by an american woman. This panda was called: Su-lin. They brought him to the zoo of Chicago. It is almost impossible to mate in a zoo. One of the reasons is, that there are many people , there is no quiet place, and they are to much disturbed. The problem is that if there are no panda`s in a zoo, people won`t see a panda for real. And almost almost everyone want to see a panda. Sometimes China brings a panda as a gift to western country`s. 10 years ago there were 3 panda`s in a zoo in the Netherlands. They stayed for a few months. The visitors of that zoo increase enornously. [ go to summary ] . |

It was fun working on a report about panda`s. I learned a lot more about them, and I am convinced that it is very important and necessary to help the panda`s. In China there are institutions to study the panda’s.It will be my wish to work there some day. But the most important thing is to maintain their environment! [ go to summary ] . |
